“Very nice, ladies and gentlemen. Very nice,” Madame Molina said, clapping her hands.

We remained in our formal waltz hold as our teacher walked through the middle of the room. No one sat on the sidelines anymore; during our class sessions every couple practiced in their designated positions for the Ball of the First Frost. Having been waltzing for the last fifty minutes, I had to agree with Madame Molina. We were looking very nice.

As I pivoted my head to keep an eye on my dance professor, I caught Chance stealing a glance at me and Daniel with a tinge of sadness before he refocused on Girtha.

Oh, the guilt.

“This Friday we will be learning the final section of the dance,” said Professor Pasha. “So please do not be late and try not to get sick. Flu season is to dancers what hunting season is to wildlife conservationists.”

Daniel and I glanced at each other.

“Class dismissed,” said Professor Pasha.

“Too bad I’m not invited to your brother’s wedding this weekend,” Daniel said as we went to gather our things. “It would’ve been another chance to practice our dance moves.”

“We’ll be fine. The ball is still a couple weeks away.” I paused. “Pietro is sorry, by the way. He was going to let me invite all you guys, but he and Evette have downsized their wedding. Given the current climate, the fewer protagonists in one place the better.”

“I didn’t even get an invite,” Blue complained as she and the rest of our friends joined us. “And I’m a hoot at weddings. Plus, the cake is always awesome.”

“I’ll bring you back a slice on Monday, Blue,” Chance offered.

“Wait. You’re going?” Daniel said.

“Traditionally all royal families are invited to royal weddings, Daniel,” SJ explained. “Due to the downsizing Crisa mentioned, Pietro’s invitation has only been extended to one, maximum two members of each royal household. I am going to represent my kingdom of Dobb so my parents do not have to make the journey. It is safer for them at our castle. Marie and Gordon volunteered to represent their kingdom.”

“And I’m going on behalf of Clevaunt,” Chance said to Daniel. “Like SJ, I feel more comfortable if the rest of my family stays where they are and I put myself out there.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow. “You do realize just because you can touch things and turn them to gold doesn’t mean you’re untouchable.” Chance shrugged and tilted his chin at me. “I am as long as Crisa’s around.”

Daniel glared at Chance. The awkwardness was almost too potent to bear. Luckily, it only lasted a second.

“Yup,” Blue said, draping an arm around my shoulder. “It definitely puts the mind at ease to be hanging with someone who can resurrect you, am I right?”

Once again—that’s what best friends are for.

We left the ballroom behind and I hoped to get as far away from the boys as possible. Plans changed when we spotted Mauvrey waiting for us in the hall, wearing one of her fifty turtlenecks. Our friend had that excited, bewildered look on her face again.
